With the rise of slow fashion nowadays, the practice of ethical and sustainable fashion is also becoming more noticeable.
As we already know, for at least the last few decades things have changed a lot in the fashion industry. With a lot of new brands popping out, clothes also become cheaper, the cycle of trends has been speeding up more than ever, and shopping has become a “normal” habit that we do very often. These fast fashion trends have brought out large global chains to dominate the shopping malls and online world.
The fast fashion industry has been proven to produce 10% of the world's emissions. It is because this business model industry is using cheap material and unethical labor to make clothing collections at a rapid pace and can be sold as cheap and trendy clothes so people can copy the style that they see on celebrities and social media influencers right away. This trend also reflects the growing consumer desire for not only affordability clothing but also the speed. This also means that there’s a lot of clothes disposed of by consumers which creates a huge amount of textile waste.
Aside from the oil industry, fashion has officially been the most second polluting industry on earth. Fast fashion's negative impact also included the use of cheap toxic textile dyes, which then put the fast fashion industry as the second largest polluter of clean water globally after agriculture. There are approximately 40 million garment workers in the whole wide world, and many of them are working for unethical garments industry that makes them don't have rights or protections. They are some of the lowest-paid workers in the world and roughly 85% of all garment workers are women.
On the other hand ethical fashion aims to address the problems it seems currently operates on the unethical garment factory such as exploitative labour, environmental damage, the use of hazardous chemicals, waste, and animal cruelty.
Ethical fashion has serious concerns about exploitative working conditions in the factories that make cheap clothes for the high street. Child workers and exploitative adults can also be subjected to violence and abuse with all the forced overtime, unhygienic surroundings, and also very poor pay. Ethical fashion has been the umbrella term to describe ethical fashion design, production, retail, and purchasing.
Usually, the ethical terms refers to the treatment for the employees. Whether the workers are being paid above the living wage, or if they have proper breaks during working hours, or they are on proper ages to work, and so on.
